The Internet and the Digital Age

When it comes to technology, it’s safe to say we all rely on some form of tech in day to day lives. Indeed, the modern era is a technological wonderland, and tech has improved our lives in many ways. It’s hard to imagine our lives without the tech at our disposal today, and there’s one pice of tech, well, several working in tandem, that is the most crucial to today’s technological and cultural landscape. I’m talking, of course, about the internet. The internet is a true technological wonder, the likes of which have never been seen before.

The internet is somehow both very new in the grand scheme of things and simultaneously deeply engrained in our culture. The internet became widely available only as recently as the late 90’s, and less than 30 years later, it’s everywhere. As such, it has revolutionized the way we live in just about every way. The way we communicate, of course, has been drastically improved via social media like Facebook, instant messaging, video chat, like Skype, etc. Online shopping allows you to place an order with Kay Jewelers in mere moments from the comfort of your own home and have it delivered right to your door within just a few days. Online gaming has transformed gaming from a niche hobby into a mainstream pop culture powerhouse and a new contender in the arena of sports via eSports like Overwatch and League of Legends. Video streaming services like Netflix are beginning to replace broadcast television as the predominant way to watch movies and TV shows in your home. Other streaming services like YouTube and Twitch have spawned whole new entertainment sub industries in the wake of their monumental success. It’s easy to see that the internet is a truly special piece of tech, but it’s also a new era of human civilization.
